Miriam Margolyes Made Me Me is a raw and unexpectedly transformative documentary, filmed entirely on a phone. In 2024, the director, Simon Draper set out to make a podcast with the legendary actress. It was conceived as her ‘final act’, a reflection on her life and the lessons she wants to impart before her death… but things soon go awry.
As they begin their podcast Miriam is sidetracked by an Australian book tour, visiting the queen, and a mission to reunite with old friends before they die. The podcast becomes a joyful road trip, and Simon takes on a new role as unofficial confidant and companion.
While Simon pushes for celebrity guests, Miriam remains focused on real people, those with rich, overlooked stories and he films the whole lot on his phone. The results are unfiltered, hilarious, and human.
The film begins about Miriam’s life but gradually becomes a reflection of Simon’s as he moves from filmmaker to unlikely participant, their evolving bond becomes the emotional heart of the film, ultimately revealing that Miriam’s true legacy isn’t just her work, but the lives she’s quietly transformed, beginning with Simon.
